Energy Planner:
Designed for energy traders, retailers with hundreds or thousands of stores and manufacturers with large production facilities to better estimate energy consumption based on the expected year-ahead weather conditions. The tool can show any city, region, custom retail geography or country level for any historical period back to 1992 and future periods up to 11 months ahead. To get started, simply pick the energy metric most important and/or applicable depending on the season of interest. Cooling Degree Days (CDDs) are used to estimate Summertime energy demand and Heating Degree Days (HDDs) are used for Winter energy demand. The selection boxes also include a comparison to last year to show the change in the forecast this year vs. last year or prior years in the past. Next, pick a starting date in the MM/DD/YYYY format. Under Miscellaneous Options we can select daily, weekly or the most common period month. The Julian option is a standard 1-31 day calendar while the Retail option is an adjusted 4 or 5 week calendar period used by most retailers and the National Retail Federation. The Location Options determine what level of geography we can select. Location is a single point (city), Region is one of WTI's geographic areas, while Custom Region is client specific. We'll get to saved planners later. Next, we chose a country, state, city, region or custom region. Once area #1 is chosen, hit Add Location. Select another location/region and hit Add Location again to add as many areas as needed. It's possible to look at multiple geographies across the world simply by changing country and picking a city. Once all the geographies are added, and a starting date is selected, we select Generate Planner to see the day, weeks or months ahead or in the past. If this is a group of geographies that will be accessed frequently, it can be saved by clicking on Save Planner and entering a specific name for the planner for future reference. To pull up a previously saved planner, simply click on saved planner under location options the next time you visit WeatherProfit.com. Once the data is displayed, it can be exported to an excel spreadsheet by selecting the Export Data button. The values shown in the table will be one of the six variables selected. The color coding shows the trends compared to last year. Red/orange indicates warmer conditions than last year, gray means similar to last year, and blues imply colder conditions than last year.
Business Application:
The Energy Planner is a quick way to determine just how much more or less energy consumption will be needed to heat/cool a single store or factory or thousands of stores anywhere in the world. Energy traders can better determine if the CME is pricing a particular heating or cooling month too high or too low, allowing profitable trades to be made with lower risk.
