Favorability Planner:
A simple tool to quickly aggregate Max, Min, Average Temperatures and Precipitation to any geography from city, region, custom retail geography to country level. Variables can be compared to last year to determine the most improved periods for seasonal categories. The first step is to determine what metric is most important to my category. If it is a Spring-Summer product it might be Max temperatures or Min Temperatures for a Winter product. It's highly recommended that the vs. LY button is selected as the year-over-year change in temperature is a very valuable tool for predicting an increase or decrease in seasonal merchandise. Recall our 1F rules of thumb in the table below:

Business Application:
The Favorability Planner is a great tool when it's important to see the weather and how it's different than last year across multiple geographies. Aggregating weather to a custom region takes seconds and can be quickly exported to external planning, forecasting and replenishment systems. Using our simple 1F industry/category rules of thumb, it's possible to determine just how strong or weak the season will be for any given geography. Timing marketing or advertising events is simple with this one snapshot of the entire season. Promotional events timed in favorable weather will be much more effective - no reason to give away margins in these favorable periods, just increase the awareness campaigns to drive even stronger sales. Pricing incentives/markdowns, coupons, BOGO events all work well at minimizing the downside in sales when the weather is unfavorable. For stand-alone retailers like Discounters or Restaurants, warmer/drier year-over-year weather conditions are better for store-traffic. For Mall based stores warmer/drier is better for Spring, but inclement weather and cool conditions in the Summer and Fall are best. Home Center store traffic benefits from warmer/drier weather year-round. Pizza delivery - a cold/wet and snowy period, especially on the weekends will bring thousands more pizza delivery orders per city!
